If I want to categorize the newborn photos styles, I will name two main categories.
1- Studio style (classic)
2- Life style.
This post will explain characteristics of each of them briefly to help you choosing a style which may match best with your interests, and you would like to have that kind for your newborn photos in Edmonton.
First, let me begin with studio style photography. As you might have guessed, this is the type of method that people often go to a photography studio that is equipped with professional gears such as cameras, lenses variety of lightings, backdrops and accessories to get pictures taken.
This form provides more control for family’s that may like to capture something special, specific, or unique that cannot be found in their home environment. For instance: parents like to pose infront of an abstract backdrop or a rustic wooden background while cuddling their newborns.
Or, capturing some black and white photos infront of a dark black backdrop or very bright white one while they are kissing their little ones. This needs special lightning which can be done in a studio environment.

Usually, studios have predesigned props, outfits and also accessories such as baby beds, baby chairs and baskets that can be used in newborn photos.
In addition to backdrops, accessories and the lighting set up in studios, posing is another factor that differentiates the photo studio from the life style studio.
Posing is a main part of a photo session even for newborns. Although our little young models may not be able to pose some of complicate poses, they will be capable to do a couple of the very simple poses.
A baby can be posed by laying down him/her on the side comfortably while the head located on his/her palm. It can be adjusted by using posing pillows to get the best position of the newborn.
Also, a tummy pose is another simple pose for newborns that they look adorable i and parents love it.
Now, let’s talk about lifestyle photography. The younger generation is a fan of this kind of photography, in which the pictures look like real life. In this category a photographer just captures the moments while people are living their life. Using real locations, normal furniture and ambient lighting are the other specifications in lifestyle photos.
If my clients are interested in having lifestyle newborn photos, I would travel to their home and capture the photos.
First, I ask my clients to choose a couple of locations in their home to photograph. Usually, the main areas would be the living room, master bedroom and baby nursery room.
Personally, I love include older siblings in the photoshoot, especially in the life style newborn photos. I believe their attendance in a photo session will bring love and spiritual connection to newborn photos. They spread their energy in the room, which radiates happiness in the pictures.
I recommend my clients to have their pets join the session in order to add a good and warm vibe to the photos.
Safety is the most important element for every task particularly during a newborn photo session.

So, keeping the newborn safe in every pose and location is essential. I recommend parents holding the baby most of the time not siblings.
And, I suggest to not leave the baby alone with the pets. I understand families would love to have newborn photos with their pets.
That’s why, I use a trick the capture the baby laying down beside the pet in a picture but, I actually photograph them separately.
In lifestyle posing, I recommend my clients to act normal, talk together, look eat each other, or even watch TV while they are cuddling the baby.
Then I will capture those beautiful moments from different angels.
I will use the parent’s bed as a main place to pose the baby for his/her individual pictures. It could be a good place for siblings’ photos as well because the bed is soft and big enough to pose siblings some lay down position close by the baby while they are kissing the new member of the family.
I like to photograph the parents sitting on the bed while they are snuggling the newborn.
Master bedroom often serves as a nice location for the family photo as well.
I recommend taking a couple of mom/dad and newborn photos in the baby nursery room. It will be memorable in the future for them when they see the baby’s first bed and toys in the pictures.
I explained two version of photography styles that families choose for their newborn photos in Edmonton. Hopefully, it helps you discover which style you are interested in to book for your newborn photos.
I am going to post more interesting photography topics in future so, stay tuned to not miss anything!
