Basically, I photograph newborn sessions indoors either in my studio or at in-home service. I believe it must be done in order to ensure optimal temperatures! It should be WARM! As an Edmonton newborn photographer, I prefer to do the newborn sessions indoors even in the Summer because of the unreliable climate in Edmonton.
I would keep the studio warm enough for newborn photography, to make sure the baby feels cozy and comfy.
The newborns are naked for many of the poses, this allows me to capture the softness of the skin, newborns adorable bodies and their cute hands and legs. I would say all parents love it as well.
So, in this regard, having a cozy environment with a warm temperature helps the newborn models to feel comfortable front of the camera and most importantly, they won’t get sick due to the cold.
In this post, I would like to describe the new photography in- home- service as an Edmonton newborn photographer.
In-home-service deems to be the most convenient newborn photoshoot for families. Because they don’t need to pack up everything for their baby and travel distances to a studio for photoshoot. It is especially difficult for new parents and it could be even harder when it is Winter or cold seasons over all.
Instead, in an in-home-service photo session, I will travel to my client’s home and set up a professional studio in the comfort of their home with professional lighting, gears, backdrops along with the plenty of accessories that I need for a newborn photography session.
Fundamentals would never be changed regardless of the location of the photoshoot. For instance:
1. The defined area for the photo session in my client’s home would be kept warm enough for the baby because of above reasons.
Interestingly as an Edmonton newborn photographer, I’ve realized the room temperature of households that have a new baby in their home is a bit higher than normal it would be.

2-Therefore, all my clients need to do is increase heat in the area that I am supposed to install the studio. This is done quite easily by placing one or two small electric heaters close by the baby.
3- I recommend my clients give the baby a bath 3-4 hours before the photo session. It may motivate the baby to stay awake for the session time.
Giving a baby bath right before photoshoot might result in a sleepy and tired baby. As babies get tired during a bath, and would love to take a nap after.
So, if your newborn photography session is booked in afternoon, your baby bath time would be in the morning.
4- Afterward, dress your baby in a comfy outfit that is easy to take off such as a zip up or button front pajamas. Babies dislike changing outfits that require going over the head so skip those and also, don’t use dressing items or accessories that we need to take off over the head.
It will minimize the waking time of the baby during a newborn photography session.
5- Make your baby happy by feeding him/her right before the photo session.
They feel sleepy and happy which is ideal for a newborn photography.
They might give us some adorable smiles with closing eyes during the session as well.
Keep your baby normal feeding schedule if it is possible but, if not, I give my clients plenty of time for feeding their baby if they become fussy and need to be fed.
In an in-home-service newborn photoshoot, moms are able to feed or snuggle their baby at their own convenience in the baby nursery which is a big advantage.

6- Include the older siblings in the baby photoshoot by dressing them in their favorite outfits. Now, they have a baby to take care of.
They’re most likely super excited because of the addition of new family member, so this photoshoot may be a great way to celebrate their connection while capturing siblings’ photos.
7- What should we wear? A common question by the parents for a baby photoshoot session. As an Edmonton newborn photographer, I recommend wearing layers in light colors due to the difference between temperature of outdoor and indoor (studio).
However, the benefit of a in-home-service is that my clients don’t need to travel to a studio so any outfits they love would work, and color coordinating is recommended.
Above are some major points of a in-home-service baby photography session. I am hoping this helps you for your newborn session.
Of course if you have further ideas, please feel free to share them as they will definitely be valuable for me.
I am preparing some new posts to share so, stay tuned to not miss anything.
